Journey Stories

In collaboration with The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts presents “Journey Stories,” a set of seven posters designed to encourage dialogue and engagement on how movement has defined America. Whether by air, land or sea, travel has played a crucial part in our economic and cultural identities.

“Journey Stories” explores how movement has shaped our nation’s history, from the earliest European settlers and Native American displacement to the effects of transportation advancements on modern mobility.

Using artifacts from METC’s permanent collection on travel in the 1800 and 1900s, we invite you to explore “Journey Stories” through a New Jersey lens. Create your own packing list and compare it to those of pioneers at the Activity Station.

Journey with us and discover more of your own journey story from April 2023 through January 2024.
